It is hard to imagine a more charming port city than Port de Sóller on the northwest coast of the island. It nestles postcard-perfectly in a gracefully curving bay, backed by the same imposing mountains that once hid evil pirates from the eyes of the law. Not only thanks to its secluded location, Port de Sóller has retained the flair of an authentic Mallorcan town where the locals go about their lives in peace and quiet. There are only a few small hotels here and the town’s vibe is relaxed and stylish.
During the day it can sometimes get a little busier. As the town and its surroundings are so distinctive Port de Sóller is a popular destination for day-trippers. A world-famous historic streetcar runs picturesquely from Palma via Valldemossa and Sóller over the hills and through lemon and orange groves to Port de Sóller. On its pretty promenade, you can enjoy a café or a caña with a few tapas, browse the small stores or be inspired by the friendly hustle. From sailors to sun worshippers, everyone finds their happiness here. By the way – a streetcar ride in the other direction is an equally fantastic Mallorca experience – Ferrocarril de Sóller takes you from the promenade all the way to Palma, with only one change.
