In Catholic Spain All Saints’ Day (“Todos los santos”) is one of the most important dates on the calendar. It is traditionally the day on which people remember those who have passed away. Anyone who can, returns to their hometown to pay a visit to the cemetery and place flowers, candles and photographs on their loved ones’ graves. The cemetery in Sóller – usually a very characterful place with its view of the majestic Tramuntana mountains in the background – is often crowded on this public holiday.
Spanish people love to combine festivals and holidays with family get-togethers, so it goes without saying that they meet up with their relatives after visiting the cemetery. “Buñuelos de vientos” – a kind of cream puff sprinkled with sugar or cinnamon, are one of the special dishes traditionally served on All Saints’ Day. Another is “panellets”, small round pastries made from potato, almonds and sugar.
