From Porto de Sóller to Valldemossa, take a rental car (25 km) or bus n° 210.
In those days, the Habsburgs were crazy! In the 19th century, they built a donkey and cart path in the mountains above Valldemossa which today attracts vertiginous hikers with one of the best views of the island.
The "Cami de S'Arxiduc" starts at an iron gate near the Finca Son Gual and leads steeply into the mountains of the Tramuntana, past old lime kilns, the refuge Refugi des Cairats and leads to the plateau of the Puig Gros. The challenging ascent is rewarded with a magnificent view of the west coast. Here, in top of the mountain village Deia is the best place for a picnic with sea views.
Continuing on a tiny path along the ridge it is difficult to take care of the way as the terrific panorama changes behind every curve. Hard to imagine that the Habsburgs were travelling on the narrow road with donkey, horse & Co. Maybe it was a kind of test of courage .... crazy!
The descent to Valldemossa gives a beautiful view of Palma.
I´m wondering if back to Habsburgs time, there was already the bakery Can Molinos down in the village? Definitely not. Too bad, then they missed the delicious Coca de Patata with Cafe con leche ...
