Did you know that Mallorca has a very long wine tradition? The Romans brought grapes to the island during their occupation and at the beginning of the 19th century, the island exported wine to the whole of Europe.
The great disaster for wine fans hapened at the end of the 19th century: phylloxera destroyed almost everything that was dear to the hearts of culinary experts throughout Europe. And the Mallorcans switched to almond trees. In the middle of the 20th century, some farmers discovered small vines that had survived the pest and viticulture slowly picked up speed again. Today, Mallorca produces excellent wines that have won international awards.
The island has over 100 bodegas and one of the wineries in our neighbourhood is Bodega Vi Rei, a young winery that was only founded in 2014. The wines are rich in flavour and colour. Quality over quantity. A real treat for the palate.
But simply tasting wine is somehow uncool, nothing special. When a mini train comes into play, it´s going to be fun! At Bodega Vi Rei, you can take a relaxed ride through the fields, learn all about winegrowing, take a look inside the hallowed halls of production and, with a bit of luck, see the wine go straight into the bottle.
Wine tasting is of course a must, but please make sure you don't overdo it. Don't drink and drive. Just taste it!
