San Bartolomé

Did you know that Sóller has its own patron saint and that beautiful St. Bartholomew church (“St Bartomeu”) is dedicated to him?! St. Bartholomew (“Sant Bartolomé”) was one of Jesus’ 12 apostles and, according to legend, became a martyr. He is said to have been skinned alive and then nailed to a cross. Bartholomew is thus often depicted with flayed skin and a knife in his hands, as are sculptures of Spanish St. Bartomeu.

This year’s celebrations held in his honor in Sóller will take place for 5 days always at the of August and include an extensive program of art, cultural and sports events for young and old. The highlight of the festival is the “correfoc” on the last night, a kind of fire race that is one of the most spectacular fire-themed events on the island. Amazing fireworks illuminate Sóller’s night sky and residents dressed up as demons mingle among the crowds, banging drums and scaring everyone.

Be warned:
The sparks that fall from the sky may burn holes in your clothes!
