Fancy a beautiful course through scenic Spanish island villages and sweeping ocean views? The balearic island of Mallorca is not only a training paradise for triathletes from around the world, but also host to one of the largest IRONMAN 70.3 events in the world. A fast course in magnificent sunny Mallorca, the race always takes places on a Saturday and allows triathletes to relax and visit the island on Sunday, it has been a global favourite for over a decade.
The starting signal for the “Ironman 70.3”, the ‘half’ Ironman, will be given on the beach in Alcúdia on May 11.
Around 3,500 triathletes from 65 countries, including some of the sport’s top names, will begin the competition with a 1.9-km swim around the “Badía de Alcúdia”, whose water is the perfect temperature for this kind of activity. Following the swim the competitors must complete a 90-km cycling course. The first 15 km are ideal for warming up their muscles before they start the 20-km climb to Lluc Sanctuary, with a punishing 600 m difference in altitude. From the Sanctuary the route takes in Caimari, Inca, Sa Pobla, Mura, and Albufera National Park before returning to Alcudia. The concluding three-loop 21.2-km half-marathon course takes the runners along the beach promenade, where strong winds can sometimes exhaust their last reserves.
