In Catholic Spain August 15, the Assumption of Mary, is a public holiday, when the faithful celebrate Holy Mother Mary’s ascension to Heaven. Many Majorcan churches take this opportunity to parade their magnificent statues of the Virgin, and St. Bartholomew church (“St Bartomeu”) in Sóller has a particularly beautiful one that includes angels watching over a sleeping Mary. Several memorial masses are also held.
